The Interstate Football League held its monthly meeting on Sunday, February 8, 2009 to discuss league schedule and the playoff system. Because of the economy, several changes were made to the 2009 schedule including reducing the regular season by two games.
The Indiana Cutters will be in the South division along with the Indiana Generals and the Ohio Wranglers. Two new expansion teams, the Columbus Cobra’s and the Greencastle Knights will complete the South division. “The South division will be very competitive” say’s Head Coach Brent Slinkard. “With the Generals, you have a strong organization and a perennial contender. The Cobra’s will be a solid program, because Chuck Foga is behind this team,” continued Slinkard. The Cutters will play each team twice: home and away. This will mean a significant cutback in travel for the Cutters in that just one game – the Wranglers – will be out of state. The remaining road games will be less than an hour away. “This decision by the league was important for teams during these difficult economic times,” says Slinkard.
The I.F.L. regular season schedule was also moved forward by two weeks as league play will begin July 11th and because of no bye weeks, other than Labor day – the regular season will end on August 29th. After the Labor Day break, the top eight teams from the North and South divisions will play a cross-division seeded playoff, beginning the first round on September 12th. The championship game will be September 26th. “We will likely open our season with a non-conference game on June 27th T.B.A.” says Coach Slinkard. The Cutters will look to compete for another I.F.L. championship in 2009.
Organized team workouts are scheduled to begin in the first week of May according to Slinkard, and a Team Organization Meeting is scheduled for April 29th. Slinkard also mentioned that skilled workouts will likely begin in early April also. The official 2009 Indiana Cutters Football schedule will be released in the coming weeks.

Jahkeen Gilmore played four years at IU and never went to a bowl game.
Lee Becton played for Lou Holtz at Notre and came within a field goal a national championship, only to have to settle for second.
Israel Thompson was an Indiana Mr. Football, yet never got to play for a state championship.
Aaron White guided Edgewood to a sectional final but walked away without a title.
Saturday night, these men and their teammates were united in a common cause, to win a championship. They were playing in the championship game of the Interstate Football League, a league for amateurs who still have a passion for football. They were playing for the Indiana Cutters, a Bloomington-based unit, against the Kosciusko Mustangs, a northern Indiana squad.
While the rest of the state paid little attention to this game, it meant the world to the men who played it. To them it was a chance for redemption, a chance to fill a void left by their careers in organized football.
The Cutters celebrated their championship win with Joe Smith on am1370 at Yogi's Bar and Grill on Tuesday night. If you missed the broadcast listen to it hear.
